Electronics below 10 Nm

This chapter reviews prospects for the development and practical introduction of ultrasmall electron devices, including nanoscale field-effect transistors (FETs) and single-electron transistors (SETs), as well as new concepts for nanometer-scalable memory cells. Physics allows silicon FETs to be scaled down to ∼3 nm gate length, but below ∼10 nm the devices are extremely sensitive to minute (su...

Spatial properties of twin-beam correlations at low- to high-intensity transition.

It is shown that spatial correlation functions measured for correlated photon pairs at the single-photon level correspond to speckle patterns visible at high intensities. This correspondence is observed for the first time in one experimental setup by using different acquisition modes of an intensified CCD camera in low and high intensity regimes. The behavior of intensity auto- and cross-correl...

Beam Intensity Profile Monitor

This paper describes an intercepting beam intenSity profile and position monitor which was developed at SLAC. It has excellent spatial resolution as well as signal efficiency. The instrument utilizes the electromagnetic cascade shower emission effect. Net charge leakage signals comparable in magnitude to the intercepted beam current are easily obtainable. The latest model of the instrument is d...

Critical petermann K factor for intensity noise squeezing

We investigate the impact of the Petermann-excess-noise factor K>/=1 on the possibility of intensity noise squeezing of laser light below the standard quantum limit. Using an N-mode model, we show that squeezing is limited to a floor level of 2(K-1) times the shot noise limit. Thus, even a modest Petermann factor significantly impedes squeezing, which becomes impossible when K>/=1.5. This appea...

Syllabic (∼2-5 Hz) and fluctuation (∼1-10 Hz) ranges in speech and auditory processing.

Given recent interest in syllabic rates (∼2-5 Hz) for speech processing, we review the perception of "fluctuation" range (∼1-10 Hz) modulations during listening to speech and technical auditory stimuli (AM and FM tones and noises, and ripple sounds). We find evidence that the temporal modulation transfer function (TMTF) of human auditory perception is not simply low-pass in nature, but rather e...
